Lenin was our grandpa, a kind and stern God. On a childhood photograph of my dad, he looks like a baby Lenin on the “Children of October” badge – a young communist’s first regalia. It was pinned to your chest in the first days of October, after turning seven. I joined the Young Pioneers' organisation at the ceremony in Lenin Museum on the Red Square, and received my red scarf. Next to my heart the badge of the young follower of Lenin was pinned, and I was taken to the Mausoleum (bypassing the long queue). The whole first week after the initiation I went to bed wearing my red scarf.
As a teenager I joined the Komsomol. The nihilism inherent to that age, reinforced by the suppressed free will embedded in the system, converted Lenin’s profile against the red banner into a symbol of man’s meanness, cowardice and dark lies. Nevertheless – the Komsomol badge to me seemed like a sexy addition to the school uniform. On the badge, Vladimir Ilich barges forward, the winds of change sweeping over his revolutionary forehead. His cheekbones and determined chin embody the forever young idea of the social utopia – happiness for all.

Ленин был нашим дедушкой, добрым и строгим богом. На старой детской фотографии мой папа был похож на бэйби Ленина со значка октябренка - первой регалии коммуниста. Его нам прикалывали его на грудь в первые дни сентября, когда нам исполнялось 7 лет. Mеня приняли в пионеры в музее Ленина на Красной Площади. Повязали красный галстук. К сердцу поближе прикололи значек юного ленинца, и повели в Мавзолей (вне очереди). Первую неделю после посвящения я спала в галстуке.
Тинэйджером я вступила в Комсомол. Нигилизм присущий этому возрасту помноженный на подавленную системой волю, сделали Ленинский профиль на фоне красного знамени символом человеческой низости, трусости и кромешной лжи. И тем не менее, комсомольский значек мне казался сэкси дополнением к школьной униформе. На нем Владимир Ильич рвется вперед, подставив ветрам событий и страстей свой революционный лоб. Его скулы и волевой подбородок олицетворяют вечно юную идею социальной утопии - счастье для всех.
