Welcome  Exhibitions

The Gamborg Gallery is happy to present this collection of Russian Fine Arts, containing works of Russian Realist Art from the 20th century, with emphasis on the period from the 1930s through the 1970s. The main purpose of our gallery is to give lovers of fine arts the opportunity to enjoy some bright examples of classical Russian and Soviet art.
The art featured here belongs to different styles, such as Classical Realism, Socialist Realism, Modernism, Russian Impressionism, Avantgarde and Muralism. The exhibitions cover a wide array of topics, ranging from classical Russian landscapes, Soviet daily life, construction and heavy industry, war scenes, Moscow scenes, portraits, agriculture, sports, rural life, as well as still life and nudes.
We also present a unique collection of graphical and industrial design of the 1950s-1970s, in the form of applied arts, textile designs, tapestries, industrial work safety posters. Another speciality of the gallery is originals to children's books illustrations of the 1950s and 1960s.

The artists whose works are exhibited in this site had their most productive periods from the 1930s through the 1960s. Many of them were taught by the most famous artists of the late 19th century and the early 20th century, and they all studied at the most prestigious art schools of the Soviet Union at the time:  the VKhuTeMas, the Polygraphical Institute, the Surikov Institute, the Repin Institute, MIPIDI, and the Kiev Art Institute.
Most artists featured led a “double” artistic life. On the one hand, they were all members of the state controlled Artists’ Union, being on the state budget of the Soviet Ministry of Culture, painting commissioned works in support of the Soviet ideology. On the other hand, they took every opportunity to paint for themselves, i.e. painting themes and in styles they really liked personally. Working on genres such as landscape, cityscape and still-life was a manifestation of artists' independence from the official ideology and therefore many fine works of art were gradually lost to the dust of artists' studios.
Here in the gallery we show both aspects of the artists’ works of the period.

 Enjoy the viewing !
